Jack Yates High School

Jack Yates High School was established in 1926 in Third Ward Houson, named after John Henry “Jack” Yates, a former slave who became a prominent minister and education advocate. The original name of the school was Yates Colored High School and it was the second segregated black high school in Houston.

The school opened with 17 teachers and 600 students. The motto of the school is “Character and Achievement” and its presence today represents a century of African American educational excellence.

The current school is located at 3650 Alabama Avenue in Houston.
